Victorian architecture refers to buildings built during the Victorian era in the mid- to late 19th century. It is a successor to Georgian architecture and a precursor to Edwardian architecture, and is primarily a revival of traditional architecture.
The most typical Victorian architecture is Gothic Revival architecture, but other architectural styles such as English Renaissance architecture were also common during this era. Although Victorian architecture developed on the basis of traditional architecture, due to the development of the steel industry in the 19th century, these buildings began to use steel frames . Due to the strength of the British Empire, this architectural style spread to British colonies such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong.
The history of the museum can be traced back to 1837, when the British government established the Government School of Design at Somerset House in London. The school had a small number of teaching collections . After the Great Exhibition was held at the Crystal Palace in 1851, the teaching collection of the School of Design was renamed the Museum of Manufactures. Henry Cole, one of the organizers of the Great Exhibition, became the first director of the museum when it was founded in 1852 and began to expand its collection. The museum also used the profits from the Great Exhibition to purchase a large piece of land south of Hyde Park, moved to the site in 1857 and was renamed the South Kensington Museum.
